That means 8 months in French. Today is our 8th month. I guess depending on how you view it, this could either be a long or extremely short amount of time. This is my first relationship, note the difference between dating and relationship, so I guess this could be considered both long and short for me.
We met around this time a year ago. I wasn't looking for a relationship, or even looking at boys at that. College is all about meeting new people, hooking up, no attachments. I've seen the harm that this destructive lifestyle has done to those around me, to both guys and girls, although the emotional damage affects very differently. I've seen everything from a no-commitment one-night stand, to relationships that last a little longer. Two weeks, one month, six months, a year and half. I've seen the infatuation. He is perfect! He's the love of my life. I really think that this could go somewhere. I've seen both guys and girls alike change into people I no longer knew. Turn into love addicts. Their partner is like their drug. Something as hardcore as heroin. The dopamine levels are off the charts. I've also seen couples move past this stage, developing into best friends. A couple that is perfect for each other. A relationship that is healthy. Surely they will go far, far beyond college. They are practically engaged, practically going to get married. I've also seen the end. The pain. The tears.
So I wasn't looking for a relationship, and for good reason. But it's funny how life works, huh? Just when you are satisfied with where you are, he decides to throw a curve ball in your direction. It's almost as if the universe got a little bored watching the movie of your life and wanted to see your reaction to the things he throws at you. You know, just for his amusement.
But here we are. At our 8th month. It's kind of crazy for me to think about. How two people could go from being complete strangers, to crossing paths and entangling into each others lives like this. I always think about how we ended up where we are today. What was it about him that intrigued me so much? From our first conversation we hit it off and I instantly knew that him and I were going to be great friends. People say that first impressions mean everything, that we formulate our opinion of a person's character in a mere thirty seconds. And I guess he must have left a good one, because here we are today.
Heureux huit mois, mon meilleur ami.
